It was about an hour ago right now that my phone was ringing: "Hi, is this Jordan? This is John Edward."
A New York native, John is best known for his shows Crossing Over with John Edward (1999-2004) and John Edward Cross Country (2006). He has also authored several New York Times bestselling books and has appeared on many talk shows. It was his appearance on Anderson with Anderson Cooper (admittedly a skeptic) last fall that really drew me in to his abilities. Is this for real?
Unfortunately, I am not a professional interviewer, and my transcript is comprised of hastily-scrawled ink on paper. Below, you will see my questions in bold followed by his translated answers (not word-for-word) from my chicken scratch. Enjoy!
What was your first psychic experience like? How old were you, and did you know what was happening?
During his childhood, John asserts that he experienced unknown psychic moments here and there, though nothing "earth-shattering." When he was around 15, he began studying metaphysics, which has evolved into parapsychology and now "new-age" parapsychology. From then on, he became more aware of his experiences and what was happening to him.
You describe your interactions with the deceased as short ideas that enter your head, like an interrupted conversation. How do you handle a studio audience with hundreds of people—are they all vying for your attention? Is there a sense of urgency from some? Do you tune it out?
John answered, "You kinda just listen." He described it as entering a cafeteria, where all you hear is noise—then suddenly, if you just focus a little, the people who are meant to come through can begin a conversation with him. He feels that their family and friends brought them to him, and that it's simply meant to be that they interact. I asked if it was like the cocktail effect—the psychological term referring to when you hear your name in a crowded room, you'll immediately turn to the direction of the speaker and try to determine who wants your attention. He said that was exactly it—when it happens, he feels tethered to the deceased person.
You describe the use of symbols, such as different colored roses. Are the deceased making these symbols for you, or is this something you're subconsciously translating?
John says these symbols are translated himself. He described a drive where he found himself next to a truck depicting white roses. Somehow, the roses stuck out to him. When he later did a reading of a woman referring to her daughter, he kept seeing the white roses, followed by the number 16. Eventually, they parsed out that it was referring to the girl's 16th birthday—thus, white roses meant "congratulations" or "celebration." Other colors have other meanings.
Do you have any other psychic abilities? Does it run in the family?
He describes mediums as being a specialized psychic, like how a gastroenterologist is a specialized type of doctor. He sees the ability in his kids already—they "know stuff." When I asked him exactly what he noticed, he spoke of his 5-year old daughter Olivia. When she was 3, he was putting her to bed one night when she said, "Daddy, remember when I died?" "No," he said, "do you remember when you died?" They continued to have a normal, mature conversation about her past life, including her former name. He was impressed that she was not "freaking out," because he says he was!
Have you ever undergone any type of brain imaging or electrical activity recording (like EEG)? Would you?
Yes, he said, he would, especially because he is a big "science geek." Around 10 years ago, he was examined by Dr. Gary Schwartz at the University of Arizona, a psychologist and researcher in the field of parapsychology, where they administered a series of tests. For the HBO show Life After Life, he was also subjected to a series of tests to rule out mind reading, prompting by visual cues, and was hooked up to an EEG and heart monitor. He described an experiment performed with another psychic in which the researchers examined whether gamma radiation was expelled during a psychic reading. Five minutes into making a psychic connection, she "blew out the machine."
Do you have a background in neuroscience? What do you think is happening?
No, he has no formal education of the brain, but he reads science books and subscribes to science magazines to learn as much as he can. He speculates that he may have some overdeveloped brain structure that accounts for his ability—but what, he has no idea. He can explain how it feels when it happens, though, and spoke fondly of how his ears go bright red. During tapings of Crossing Over, his makeup artist would have them stop the camera so they could apply makeup to his ears, because "it looked weird." He believes a number of "biochemical changes" must be at work, brain and body alike.
Many studies have shown that certain personality types are more prone to psychic ability, such as creative, imaginative, and having a strong sense of fantasy. How would you describe your personality?
"Well, I have a Superman tattoo. Does that answer your question?"
What do you want scientists and skeptics to know about what you do?
John likes skeptical people, not cynical people. He asserts that scientists should be explorers, forming questions and seeking discoveries—not turning their backs simply because there isn't already existing evidence.
Do we all have psychic abilities? As a researcher, I am interested in sleep. When we dream about deceased loved ones, is that us missing them, or is it something more?
John says we are indeed more open to unconscious awareness as we sleep, as our brains are functioning differently than our awake, conscious minds. Most dreams, he says, are just us missing our loved ones. On rare occasions, however, he says that visits can occur—and you know they're visits because the dream stands out to you. Something "profound" or "detailed" happens, and the dream doesn't fade over time.
---
I spent a solid 20 minutes on the phone with John. He was very amicable, candid, and invested in the conversation. At the end, he told me he enjoyed the interview and was interested in my neuroscience studies, appreciating that it was a "forward-thinking" field. He encouraged me to continue being open while seeking answers to these mysterious questions.
Am I a skeptic? I'll always be a skeptic. I love magicians and illusionists, and I love finding out how they do their tricks. But I've also always been hopeful—and for me, lack of proof doesn't deny its existence.

An affable conman. If this was real, a studying scientist could win a Nobel Prize, and Edward could get a million dollars off James Randi (http://www.randi.org/site/index.php/1m-challenge). Neither materialise because it's hocum.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of this challenge for awhile now, but no matter how hard I search, I can never uncover what, exactly, the scientific tests are that they perform on these so-called psychics.
ReplyDeleteI've scoured my brain, and have no idea how one could separate a psychic from an imaginative, fanciful person using scientific methodologies.
Perhaps he is a conman, or perhaps he really does possess some sort of gift. Maybe we'll never know. But something about the Randi challenge has always rubbed me the wrong way—how people who truly believe they possess psychic abilities automatically fail the pre-screen. What, exactly, is the "right" test to do?
Either you believe or your do not; I am a believer and a skeptic and truly enjoyed this interview, thank you.
ReplyDeleteUntil you experience the power of becoming connected with those who have passed and the "knowing" that a the connection is real and true, you may be skeptical. It happened for me and I am now a believer. There is NO WAY the psychic could have KNOWN details that she revealed. In this video it is clear that two families now know of the connection. They clearly were given details that John could not have been knowledgeable of. Is this alone not proof that a connection exists that we cannot explain?
ReplyDeleteI believe that you must always approach this topic with a healthy dose of skepticism and an open mind. People such as John Edward and others have again and again proven their abilities to levels that scientifically cannot be debated. Are they all for real? No. Continue to test, investigate and thank you Jordan for keeping an open mind and posting this interview.

ReplyDeleteThank you all for your thoughtful comments, and thanks pgzaula for the link—I checked it out yesterday after talking with John. I may try to contact Dr. Gary Schwartz with some questions. I picked up a John Edward book at the library today that talks a bit about his study with Schwartz, so I will try to get both sides of the story here!
ReplyDeleteI am myself blessed with certain precognitive and discernment abilities and I have seen John at work and don't believe, but know, that he has remarkable skills. I have had 'visitations' from deceased relatives which were much much more than just 'dreams' one of which was my father, calling me on the phone to announce that his wife was going to have two cars for the funeral procession - one for her because she wants to grieve privately and one for us, his children. As he was concluding the call, he said he was leaving now, but per his promise to me he would return. When I woke up from this 'dream', I started to make breakfast and my stepmother called to say my father had died about an hour before. She never said anything about cars but told me when the funeral would take place. When I arrived, my uncle said "She has two cars, one for her and one for you kids. Don't take it the wrong way, OK?" I smiled and said, "I know." My father's energy was still around for the funeral and I know, absolutely, his message to me was to ease any tension that might develop between me and his wife.
ReplyDeleteHey Jordan,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed and appreciated your interview with John. I have been an admirer of his for several years. I do believe we all have psychic abilities (if you prefer you may call it intuition). The simplest of which is that "gut reaction" we have upon meeting someone. We instinctually know if they are a "good" or a "bad" person. We also all have had the experience of reaching for the phone before it rings.
If you study Chakras you will know that the Solar Plexus chakra, also known as Manipura, is where psychic development starts, that "gut reaction." As the energies/vibrations increase so does our connection to everything and our psychic abilities increase as the energy rises through the "third eye" and finally the crown chakra.
You mention that creative, imaginative people are more prone to psychic activity. Most of these people spend more time in their right (or more intuitive) brain. I do not believe this is a coincidence. We are taught today to be more logical (or left brained) so our intuitive nature goes malnourished. Like everything else psychic ability is a muscle that must be exercised regularly to become developed.
I also believe that neurosciences and parapsychology are all looking at the same things and just defining it differently. The recent Law of Attraction craze is teaching the same principles as Cognitive Behaviorism and NLP. That WE are the creators of our realities. Events simply are. It is the definitions we place on them that gives them meaning and helps create our view of the world.

When scientist came of age and adopted the Cartesian Model of thought, there was a sad loss of honor for experience, in as much as some experiences cannot be tested scientifically. When a psychic or medium enters into the 'zone' and experiences the voices of the departed, there is no tool, as far as I know that can measure the frequency that is experienced. I say 'experienced', because I understand some mediums describe it as see/feel. It is a travesty that in the scientific world there is a preference to only accept what can be measure as true. Have the critics, ever fallen in love, could they measure it? No because there are very few tests to measure emotion or feelings. Is it acceptable to say 'I don't know' Do you know if you have a soul and that Plato believed that it would return to the Planets after you die? See Timeaus (Plato) When CG Jung was going through his own experiences of connecting to spirits, was he a con man, or did his theories grow into a greater understanding of the psyche. All I can say is, I have never spoken to John Edward, I am interested in his work. I have enormous respect for him and the work that he does. I choose to believe he has a genuine gift. We can be in a place of wonder and accept that some things are not able to be measured by science, but it does not mean that they are not true. We theorize about black holes and expanding universes, but, are we 100% sure that the theory is correct? Science is also lacking in application of measurement, and fortunately there are brave intelligent people like Jordan Gaines, who are open minded enough to ask the questions. Science has so much still to fathom out, such as how to cure cancer, is there a genuine place for spiritual healing, will the vaccine being worked on now be able to prevent HIV, did Edgar Cayce really 'see what he prophesied? Let's put these issues all in the same pot, and see which questions can be honestly answered with 'provable' scientific tests. Why, in so many generations was there talk of 'An Angel Appeared' and yet in this one, if an Angel appears, you may well be put into a straight jacket? I think that it is time that we accepted that there are unexplained gifts that some people have, and enjoy them.
Interesting story Sandy. I know a few people who have had similar experiences—they have a very strong dream ('visitation') from a loved one, then come to find that the loved one has passed the next morning. It happens too often for it to be merely coincidence, I feel.
ReplyDeleteGary: I have never heard of the Manipura—thanks for informing me. I will look into it. I'm glad you enjoyed the interview.
ReplyDeleteBernie: Thanks for your perspective and the kind words. And for the Shakespeare quote!
Everyone should have a healthy dose of skepicism but everyone knows everything in some part of themselves. it's part of our connection to the higher intelligence, or whatever you would call it. whether people ignore it because they are afraid to believe in themselves or some other reason, I don't know. But even Dr. Oz, Dr. Depak Chopra and numerous others have said the greatest problem people have today is not feeling connected to anything or anyone. If the comments on this blog are any indication, a lot of people are just too indifferent to connect with their inner knowing in any significant way. This lack of spiritual connection is the root of a lot of psychological and even physical problems caused by stress and loneliness.
ReplyDeleteI have dreams about my past lives. The people remind me of those I view today, yet none of the things that happen are of me in this body. I watch the medium from long island and find her life as intresting as I do John's.
ReplyDeleteNo body can know all is what I grew up and was raised with.
Yet the happenings of the being physic has everything to do with intellengce. I know this becasue I live with a man that has Einstin's IQ. He was not the type to be swayed into mediums or people with physic abilites yet I get my time on the tv and he watchs to enhance his knowledge. Reading, hearing or viewing will never sway the skeptic but it will become a matter of knowledge in the brain. Anyone smart enough to make statements for or against has been feeding their brain and the brain will retain that data, weather good or bad. Your brain will fight off the logical depending on how you were raised. The others will access the absorbed data and find the reward and reason they have on beleiving in the physics and the rewards we seek with them. Until me my bf didnt have dreams...my intrests became common with him and now he dreams and tells me..its my fault. Are dreams damaging or do thy have a purpose?+
I trust in physics and will aways ask other about their beliefs.
There will be that "moment of clarity" for everyone. I have no doubt.
ReplyDeleteI went to see John in SF a couple of years ago and for some reason did not raise my hand enough to get a reading, when similar ones were being done. We experienced a home invasion tat left my gorgeous spirited husband & I for dead..I only survived a shot through the head & chest from a 45 magnum. I will pursue John Edward for a reading if opportunity arises
ReplyDeleteHi Jordan,
ReplyDeleteThank you for looking at this from the point of view of a true sceptic, rather than reflexively dismissing it because it doesn't fit into the scientific worldview, because there isn't yet a theory to explain it. I'm a cognitive science grad student myself, and after seeing John Edward perform live five times, I still have no explanation for how it works, but it does. His performances aren't edited down to the most convincing outtakes on TV -- John consistently presents people with information that is much too specific to be simply good guesses that hopeful and grieving people fit to match their own lives.
I think that's ultimately the most decisive way to scientifically test the reality of phenomena such as mediumship, telepathy, out of body experiences, remote viewing, past lives, etc. Can a person produce specific information that they would have no way of knowing otherwise?
A couple of interesting books I'd recommend for anyone taking a sceptical but open-minded scientific approach to the paranormal are "Ghost Hunters: William James and the Search for Scientific Proof of Life After Death" by Deborah Blum, and "Fringe-ology: How I Tried to Explain Away the Unexplainable-And Couldn't" by Steve Volk.
Tapestry: I agree with you. I feel the connection will, unfortunately, get worse with time in our society.
ReplyDeleteUFO: You have a very interesting perspective and it was refreshing to see what you had to say.
Maria: How do you think that will come about? Scientifically?
Zenko: Very sorry to hear about your situation. I would be both interested and skeptical going to John for something like that myself. I'd be afraid to hear something I wouldn't want to hear, especially when there's nothing to verify whether he's right or wrong.
Michael: Thanks for the book recommendations. Interesting to hear a view from another grad student!
Another skeptical view to pose would be: Okay, so psychics claim they can speak with the dead. It makes for great TV, and gives us living a lot of comfort knowing our loved ones are still there with us. But on the other end, what exactly are the deceased DOING now that they've passed, and how do they COMMUNICATE with the psychics? Can all of them do that? In essence...what happens after we die? Can THAT ever be scientifically approached?
Love it or hate it--John to me is the real deal. I've seen shows where he tells people exactly what they did and those people had never spoken a word about what they did to anyone--like a man who had smelled his son's jacket right before going to a Crossing Over show. You can't make this stuff up. John is great and I only wish I had some of his ability. I try but he's got a gift from God!!
